Smelled of clove. Can you imagine? Maybe the local nursery will be selling Pinks and one can purloin that deep scent of clove by dropping one's face into the plant for a moment of joy. Or spray on Etro's Dianthus, or Caron's Ballodgia.
So what happened to those almost mythical days of scent? I'm afraid it was the penchant for the lasting power of the poor carnation who still gives her all in FTD coffee cups and stands in the hot sun at the cemetery, forgotten and holding out long after the Oasis dries out in the funeral basket.
Yes, the carnation is making a comeback in high-end, beautifully arranged vases by floral designers who know how to use them. She is a beauty, even without scent.
But, customers who ask 'please no carnations' are justified in their dislike of them by their experience of how they've been used in the past.
I'm going to grow them next year and give customers an old fashioned fragrance experience that will last long…but not too long. Who knows? Maybe someday they'll again be as beloved as the sweet pea .

I like carnations! I used to get my mom red and white carnations for Valentine's Day! I like them better than roses....no prickers!
Exciting--I think it's a great idea. Carnations also got abused by being dyed weird colors. Love the illustration.
They don't deserve their tarnished reputation. The fragrance is divine and those really beautiful super ruffly carnations are quite stunning. xx
Oh Bless you for trying to bring them back!I will admit a few years back I poo poohed them but quickly found the error of my ways, they last forever for crying out loud! What on earth is wrong with that? I agree with Jennifer, maybe those odd ubiquitous green ones during St Paddy's just killed it. Can't wait to see what you do with them :)
Carnation designs are awesome. I really like it. Perfectly suits for the special occasions.

We have been noticing really beautiful carnations as well and loving them. They were the abused workhouse for so long of the FTD flower-mill. The antherium, however, despite the NYT effort to revive it's tattered reputation must remain flower-non-grata.
